Review - Songs of the Invisible Summer Stars - American Record Guide 2020.
“Carmen “Braden lives in Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories in Canada. In addition to being a composer and performer, she also spends time making field recordings. Her biography notes that her “musical creations are influenced by the sonic environment, both natural and man made”, and after spending time with her work, that certainly rings true. There is a feeling of vast and open space in her work, regardless of subject matter. In the Marrow Lives a Woman pairs the classic piano trio with percussion in a highly effective manner. Don’t you want to listen to hand drumming and cymbal crashes at the height of a piano trio’s crescendo? Bend Willow Branch (this version for flute, oboe, and cello) begins soft and wayward, with whimsy that soon changes into kaleidoscopic color. Songs of the Invisible Summer Stars encapsulates Braden’s musical aesthetic well: the work comes across as airy yet grounded; whimsical but full of reality, with tonal harmonies that reach into each other and constantly merge, continually changing the scope of their aural footprint. This is a mustbuy if you are interested in site-specific contemporary music and earth-centered subject matter. Exquisitely performed and beautifully, this is a gem. Perhaps another album will follow this one—Braden’s new project is capturing sounds created by ice, and she is currently studying the ice of Great Slave Lake in Canada. © 2020 American Record Guide”
